VITA Tax Appointments May Be Cancelled, but Help Is Still Available!
January 13, 2022

VITA, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, is a service provided by volunteers and generally offered at the library to help individuals with tax preparation. Earlier in the year, we worked in conjunction with the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island to facilitate appointments at the library. However, due to current conditions and less volunteer availability, the library unfortunately had to cancel this in-house service for 2020 taxes.
However, remote tax assistance is still available to those who need it. You can contact VITA representatives directly through our partners at the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island. You can find a link to their organization here. The Bethpage Virtual VITA Program is another option to look into for tax preparation. The link to their organization can be found here.
Self-preparation of taxes is still always an option. Free File lets you prepare and file your federal income tax online for free. Popular and common types of forms for filling out your tax returns can be downloaded and printed from here for federal and here for state. General technology assistance like scanning and uploading documents can be found by coming into the library and asking one of the librarians.
Many of these free services are available to those who make medium to low income with certain eligibility requirements found on their respective sites.
